| The Mattole were a sedentary coastal hunter/gatherer tribe. The Pacific Coast Athapaskans arrived in the area late in the first millennium from Canada. The tribe was located in California on the Bear and Mattole River drainages, and a portion of the Eel River. Their pre-1800 population loss would have been as a result of conflicts with other tribes, or the aboriginal population estimated may have been overstated. They later indeed suffered from the influx of gold rush settlers and miners. |
