The Esselen were a semi-sedentary hunter/gatherer language family of California. They were located on the upper Carmel and Sur Rivers and along the coast from Point Lopez to Point Sur. The tribe was destroyed by missionization, even before the influx of gold rush miners and settlers. Descendants remain in their aboriginal territories.
